  4.     For nearly four decades the Roman Catholic Church had no
  5. legal status in a country that is more than 90% Catholic. Last
  6. week, however, Poland became the first East bloc nation to
  7. recognize the church. The parliament approved a law that permits
  8. the church to operate businesses, schools and hospitals, and to
  9. run radio and television stations. The action came in the wake
  10. of a power-sharing agreement reached between the government of
  11. General Wojciech Jaruzelski and the Solidarity labor movement,
  12. which has strong ties to the church. Catholic leaders have
  13. played a key role in negotiating the agreement with Solidarity
  14. and the promise of relatively open elections, set for next
  15. month.

  17.     The establishment of formal diplomatic relations between
  18. Warsaw and the Vatican is expected to come next. That would be
  19. the first such link between the Holy See and a Soviet bloc
  20. government. It would also provide a capstone to a campaign for
  21. mutual recognition dear to the heart of Pope John Paul II, the
  22. only Polish-born Pontiff in church history.
